At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Summarize ethical and legal complexities surrounding MAiD in cases where mental disorders are significant co-morbidities, including the relevant safeguards, eligibility criteria, and challenges
- Contribute to informed debates on the circumstances where mental disorders are significant co-morbidities in request for MAID, considering both the potential benefits and potential risks

Biography
Amanda practices exclusively in the area of health law at Alberta Health Services (AHS), providing practical and timely legal advice to a variety of healthcare professionals and administrators. Her practice extends to systemic legal issues within the health sector including medical assistance in dying (MAiD), quality and patient safety, mental health (including forensics), consent and capacity, and privacy, which features prominently in each of these practice areas.
Prior to joining AHS, Amanda worked in the private sector and specialized in medical malpractice, privacy and insurance. Before commencing her legal career, Amanda obtained a Master of Social Work and practiced in the field of mental health. Amanda is currently completing her Master of Laws focused on the legal interpretation of a voluntary request for medical assistance in dying (Cand. May 2024). Amanda regularly guest lectures at various universities across Canada and is invited to speak at national and provincial conferences on health law issues. She is currently co-authoring Alberta’s first Annotated Health Information Act, which will be published by LexisNexis.

Biography
Mona Gupta has an active practice in consultation-liaison psychiatry with a particular interest in the interface of psychiatry and endocrinology. Her academic focus is in ethics and philosophy of psychiatry. She has been actively involved in the debate about MAID for persons with mental disorders. In 2022 she chaired the federal government's Expert Panel on MAID and mental illness.

Biography
Jon Hunter is a Professor at the University of Toronto, and holds the Pencer Family Chair in Applied General Psychiatry at the Sinai Health System where he also heads the Psychosocial Team at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Center, and works on the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison team. His interests include the psychological care of cancer patients, the role of early life experience in adaptation to disease, the role of therapeutic alliance in treatment outcomes, and supporting hospital staff in times of strain.

Biography
Dr. Trouton is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice at UBC. She completed her medical training at Queen’s University in 1990, residency in Calgary and holds a Masters of Public Health from Harvard. She has been committed to social justice and patient choice throughout her career.
In 2016, Konia started her practice in MAiD alongside her other commitments. She is a co-founder of CAMAP and has been involved in the development and leadership of regional and national initiatives in MAiD education. She is the co-lead of 2 topics in the Canadian MAiD Curriculum, and is the President of CAMAP.
