Biography

I have been nursing for 2 decades and moved into doing MAiD work 2 years ago. As a manager for the MAiD services in Manitoba, I provide operational leadership to for provincial service and support the MAiD team.

I do not have an affiliation (financial or otherwise) with a for-profit or not-for-profit organization.

I do not intend to make therapeutic recommendations for medications that have not received regulatory approval (i.e., “off-label” use of medications).

Biography

Laurel Plewes is the Operational Director of the MAID Program at Vancouver Coastal Health, one of the five regional health authorities within BC. She was one of the first nurses to take on the role of care coordinator in the country and has endeavoured to grow her program and create a community of practice along with her colleagues. Out of her clinical expertise in pediatrics, and specifically pediatric intensive and palliative care, Laurel understands that advocacy with respect to right to die with dignity inevitably required exceptional insight into legislation, ethical, regulatory and social context that including the development in practice internationally. She has worked on a variety of provincial and national initiatives, including government and research and the Health Canada Model MAID Practice standards. Laurel is excited to continue to work with this highly motivated group of professionals to improve MAID across Canada.
