Dr. Iain Keenan
Newcastle University

Iain is a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy in the School of Medical Education (SME) and is an Advance HE National Teaching Fellow. He supervises anatomy education research projects conducted by undergraduate and postgraduate research students.

Guest Speakers:
Dr. Susan Lamb
University of Ottawa

Dr. Susan Lamb is the Jason A. Hannah Chair in History of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine’s new Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME). Her scholarly interests span the history of medicine, across time and its diverse subject matter, and her research program includes work on the historical development of university medicine and medical education, anatomy and pathology, psychiatry, nursing, and global health and disease. In collaboration with other members of DIME’s Medicine and Humanities Unit, Professor Lamb is involved in developing humanities-based learning strategies in Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) curriculum, coordinating teaching in History of Medicine, and supervising undergraduate and graduate research in History of Medicine. A Canadian, she obtained her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins in 2010. In addition to many articles published in peer-reviewed journals, she is the author of Pathologist of the Mind: Adolf Meyer and the Origins of American Psychiatry published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2014. Dr. Lamb succeeds the university’s inaugural Hannah Chair, Professor Emeritus Toby Gelfand, appointed in 1977, who established the University of Ottawa as a leader in scholarship and teaching in History of Medicine.

Dr. Walter Hendelman
University of Ottawa

Walter was born and raised in Montreal (in the Jewish tradition), and did all of his University education including medicine at McGill, graduating in 1962. Next was one year of a general internship and one year of Pediatric Medicine, followed by four years of post-doctoral research. The training included nerve tissue culture and electron microcopy, with three of those years at Columbia Medical Centre in New York City under the tutelage of Dr. Malcolm Carpenter (a Neuroanatomist and well-reputed author of texts) in the lab of Dr. Richard Bunge (research).

Dr. Hendelman began his academic career in 1968 at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Anatomy, and commenced teaching Gross Anatomy. The chairman at that time was Dr. Joseph Auer who passed away suddenly. The subsequent chair was a neuroanatomist, Dr. Marc Colonnier. It was at that juncture that Dr. Hendelman began his teaching experience with ‘the brain’, and when he also began to develop his passion for conveying the subject matter to medical students in a way that would be both comprehensible (and interesting).

His first publication was a set of neuroanatomical illustrations – developed by a medical student -- each with explanatory text. Then followed video demonstrations of the features of the gross brain, accompanied by a narration including the functional aspects. The brain atlas continued to expand with photographs and additional illustrations, again done by others, which culminated in its publication by various medical publishers. The Atlas of Functional Neuroanatomy is now in its 3rd edition (2016) published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis), accompanied by a website (in both English & French). The ATLAS has been translated into French and Italian.

Dr. Hendelman is also co-author of The Integrated Nervous System with two practicing (but now retired) neurologists, Dr. Peter Humphreys (pediatric) and Dr. Chris Skinner (adult). This is a problem-based clinical text, combining both neuroanatomy and clinical neurology, accompanied by a website of clinical cases. The 2nd edition (2018) is also with CRC Press.

Along with these accomplishments, Dr. Hendelman earned a Masters of Education degree from OISE (University of Toronto). He was also instrumental in establishing a ‘professionalism program’ for medical students at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa.

Presently, Dr. Hendelman is Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM), at the University of Ottawa.

Mr. Vijay Kapal
University Of Ottawa

Vijay Kapal joined the University of Ottawa as a Lab. Technician in 1973 but later, due to repeated requests by the medical students, he was offered to teach Histology, Embryology and Neuroanatomy to 1st and 2nd year medical students.  In 1995, he was elected as Honorary President of the medical student’s executive body the Aesculapian Society and in the same year he received the Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Award of Excellence.  From 1997-2000, he served as Chairman of the Medical Student Advisory Council.  The graduating classes of (Meds 1998, 2006, 2007,2008) gave him the honor of being their Honorary Class President (The honorary president is chosen by the graduating class and is the Faculty member that has made significant contribution to their four years of medical school). In 2000, he was one of the 14 individuals honored across Canada by the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) with the Friend of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students Award.  In 2004, he lectured for the Mini-Med School. Along with the Medical Students, he participated in many Shave-a-Thons that raised thousands of dollars for pediatric cancer research. He was a recipient of very prestigious award, The Capital Educators Award 2005. Dalton McGuinty, then Premier of Ontario applauded him, “Your continued dedication to the education of others has positively contributed to the success of countless students, and has made a significant impact on their lives. Your influence on these students will benefit our province for decades to come.” He was a recipient of Faculty Award of Excellence in Professionalism 2007. After his retirement in 2011, he continued to do some teaching as an Adjunct Professor in CMM from 2011-2014.
