Who should attend? 
Ontario family physicians and specialists and their teams who are looking to advance their quality improvement skills and those who are working on their CPSO QI/QA practice improvement plans.

What is the course content? 
This is an interactive, experiential learning program designed to provide a practical approach to quality improvement through skill development, the identification of practice data sources, leveraging your EMR and the application of QI tools to develop a practice improvement plan and its implementation.

How will I learn?

There will be 3 virtual 3 hour sessions with didactic and interactive learning, breakout sessions with trained QI coaches, as well as practice enhancement facilitation by OntarioMD + other QI support between sessions to assist in application of knowledge gained.

Program Layout

 Three Sessions Workshop

  • 3 hours per session of interactive, applied learning through a quality improvement project case 
  • Face to face, engagement between learners and faculty
  • Taught by expert faculty who are experienced in quality improvement
  • Mentorship Between Sessions!

Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, the learner will be able to:

 1.    Complete a QI practice plan (such as CPSO or QIIP) 

2.     Identify data sources for use in practice assessment

3.      Prioritize an area(s) for improvement in practice

4.      Develop an approach to implementing a beneficial change

5.      Assess the impact of the improvement change

Establish a system to enable ongoing and future improvements

Session 1

By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:

 1. Discuss the importance of practice improvement including fulfilling CPSO requirements, better outcomes for physicians and team, better outcomes and satisfaction of patients 

2. Identify areas of practice that might benefit from a focus on improvement -Review principles of quality improvement using the Model for Improvement 

3. Describe sources of data to help identify areas for practice improvement and the importance of data-driven practice improvement 

4. Identify tools to help in identifying team partners for practice improvement and opportunities/ideas for change 

5. Develop an approach to identifying areas of practice improvement

Session 2

By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:

1. Describe the elements of the Model for Improvement

2. Develop SMART goals and an AIM statement for a practice improvement

3. Identify tools to assist in focusing on exactly what can be improved including fishbone diagrams, 5 WHYS and the Pareto principle

4. Define outcome, balancing and process measurements and how they are used in practice improvement

5.  Complete a CPSO practice improvement plan

6. Develop an approach to identifying a change that will lead to an improvement

Session 3

By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:

1. Describe the Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle - Identify implementation strategies to assist you in realizing your practice improvement 

2. Implement ways to make your change sustainable for the future - Recognize other areas in practice that might benefit from a practice improvement approach 

3. Discuss ways to use practice improvement to attain MOC/MainPro+ credits

This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 9 Mainpro+ credits.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada – Section 1 (Workshop)
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by Continuing Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa up to a maximum of (9 hours)

  1. *9 credits for the modules with a chance to earn 34 + extra credits as per CPSO
