Breast cancer is a complex disease characterized by many morphological, clinical, and molecular features. For many years, this disease has been classified according to histopathologic criteria, known as the tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) staging system. Clinical criteria that include immunohistochemical markers, such as the estrogen receptor (ER), the progesterone receptor (PR), and the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), provide a classification of breast cancer and dictates the optimal therapeutic approach for treatment. Different treatments are now available based on the molecular subtype of breast cancer, generally a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and/or targeted therapy. Their effectiveness is constantly increasing, allowing a reduction in mortality. Management of breast cancer with a multidisciplinary approach allows personalized care avoiding over treatment thereby avoiding the many early and late psychological, physical, and social side effects.
This Annual Scientific Meeting is presented by the Canadian Society of Breast Imaging in partnership with The University of Ottawa's Department of Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics. The ASM will present the progress made in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer using advanced imaging techniques. Presentations will cover updates in diagnosis, imaging, application of artificial intelligence in early breast cancer diagnosis and workup of breast cancer and its various clinical presentations. Topics of interest for trainees and technologists are included. Presentations will also include CSBI's Patient Engagement Working Group and the peer review process in breast imaging.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
The intended audience includes radiologists, trainees, technologists, family physicians and surgeons.
