Overview

Art in Medicine Student Group

Details

Arts in Medicine (AIM), a uOttawa medical student interest group focused on the valuable implications of humanities and artistic expression within medicine. Co-led by Lillian Abebe, Hollie Davies, Cathy Song, Isabella Zabek (second year medical students at uOttawa). In an effort to foster kinship, this exhibition, curated by uOttawa Arts in Medicine (AIM) invites participants to reflect on identity as a sense of shared humanity, an intrinsic component to quality health care. The piece will be interactive, featuring a thematic grid upon which any attendee, from health care professionals, to patients, to students, will be offered the opportunity to snap and display a polaroid photo of themselves, their true identity disguised behind a word or symbol that they feels represents them, ultimately creating a collaboratively completed photo display. We have purposefully chosen a heart-shaped grid as a symbol that carries both literal and symbolic meaning in this context, being both an organ in the body and symbol of compassion, respectively. In engaging with this work, we hope that we will be able to further highlight how identity is encompassed by much more than the physical and reiterate the true importance of humanity in medicine - and we anticipate that it will continue to live on as a reminder of such.
