Session Details

Objectives: i. Summarize how MAiD oversight is undertaken in different jurisdictions across Canada highlighting how the information is used. ii. Recognize the importance of sharing oversight data to deepen our understanding of current MAiD practice to inform and encourage quality improvement. iii. Describe an example of a quality improvement initiative that enhances management of complex MAiD cases.

Sara Bergen is currently the Director for Medical Assistance in Dying at the B.C. Ministry of Health, where she leads the provincial MAiD Oversight Unit. Sara previously worked as the Manager for of the MAiD Oversight Unit when the Unit began its work in 2018.

Doctor Dirk Huyer

Biography

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986,he has served as a coroner in Ontario since 1992 and served as Regional Supervising Coroner for five years prior to becoming Chief Coroner in 2014. Since early 2016 Dr. Huyer has been actively involved in Ontario’s response to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).

Medical director in various types of hospitals, from a rural hospital to a University Hospital in Quebec. Participated in international projects on the organisation of medical services, was deputy Medical Director for 8 years at the Ministry of Health, responsible for specialized medical services, hospitals and efficiency of medical services organization. Since October 2024, Chairman of Commission sur les soins de fin de vie.
