Objectives:
i. Review the WHO definition of Palliative Care and how it may impact the care of patients requesting MAID.
ii. Analyze the culture that permits MAID and Palliative Care to work well together and delineate those factors that have facilitated this harmony.
iii. Recognize the challenge of working with those who are not supportive of MAID and how a positive outcome can be achieved.
iv. Describe the evolution in attitudes to MAID among Palliative Care Practitioners and any factors that might contribute to this evolution.

Biography
Dr. Sandy Buchman is a palliative care physician and Professor in the Division of Palliative Care, Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. He currently holds the Freeman Family Chair in Palliative Care and is Medical Director of the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care at North York General Hospital in Toronto, where he practices palliative and end of life care, including MAID assessment and provision. He practiced palliative/end of life care and MAID with the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Sinai Health System and the Palliative Care and Education for the Homeless (PEACH) program in Toronto for several years. He was a comprehensive Family Physician for 22 years with special interest in Social Accountability, Primary Care Cancer Care, Palliative Care, HIV/AIDS and Global Health - including volunteer experiences in South America and Africa. He is a founder and medical lead of a new hospice residence (Neshama) in North York opening in 2026. He also co-founded MAIDHouse, an independent facility in Toronto for the provision of Medical Assistance in Dying. He has served as President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Medical Association. He was awarded the Order of Canada in December 2024.

James Downar is the Head of the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa, where he also works as an Intensivist. He holds a Clinical Research Chair in Palliative and End-of-Life Care.
Dr. Brittany Rance

Biography
Dr. Brittany Rance is a palliative care physician, serving as the Division Head and Medical Director for Palliative Care at Vancouver General Hospital. She is a Clinical Instructor with the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Rance completed her initial training in in family medicine before pursuing a Year of Added Competency in Palliative Care at UBC. In 2022 earned her Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Rance is passionate about Quality Improvement, and is an advocate for the integration of palliative care across all healthcare settings.
Outside of her professional endeavours, she finds balance and renewal spending time in nature and with her family.

Hayden Rubensohn

Biography
Dr. Rubensohn completed Internal Medicine training at UBC in 2021. He now works as a palliative care specialist in Calgary, and is involved with the local MAiD program as well.
Palliative Care Physician Kevin Wade

Biography
Kevin Wade is a palliative care physician and MAiD provider in Victoria, British Columbia. He provides both inpatient and outpatient care at Island Health and BC Cancer Victoria.
