Objectives: i. Describe the conditions “chronic regional pain syndrome” and “central sensitization syndrome”. ii. Review the role of emotion-based psychotherapies (such as EAET) in treating chronic pain and other symptoms iii. Identify evidence-based treatment modalities for chronic pain iv. Access resources to help assess patients with chronic pain for MAiD.

Biography

Dr. Brenda Lau is a Pain Specialist/Anesthesiologist practicing in Vancouver and Surrey, BC and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) since 2004. She is a   Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australia & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists after completing a two year Pain Medicine fellowship and Master of Medicine degree in Sydney, Australia.


Since restarting her clinical practice in 2008 in Anesthesiology and Pain medicine, she led the development of the Surrey based JPOCSC multidisciplinary pain clinic as medical director,  and was the first Chair of the FHA Region wide pain services across 10 FHA hospital sites.


Brenda was a founder and board member of, and continues to contribute to, the Pain BC Society that formed in 2008.  She has been highly involved in provincial wide services including the  Pain Practice Support Program , BCWH Chronic Pelvic Pain program, GP pain initiative, Northern Health Authority Pain Prevention & Management Program.


She is an FRCPC founder of the Royal College subspecialty of Pain Medicine and was the first UBC pain medicine residency director until 2018.


In 2013,  she co-founded a community based pain clinic called Changepain to improve earlier access to effective MSP funded multidimensional pain care and pain research. This is now a UBC fellowship training site with capacity for up to 6 fellows.  The clinic has 70 staff and clinicians.  It is recognized as one of Chronic Pain Centres of Excellence by  Veterans Affairs of Canada.


She is a certified hypnotherapist and integrates this in her full interventional pain practice at Changepain and anesthesiology practice at Surrey Memorial Hospital. She is passionate about women's health and pain, and the intersections of emotional governance, brain health, mind mastery, noetic healing and quantum brain.

Ed Weiss is a GP and MAID provider who is pursuing additional training in psychotherapy for chronic pain and other physical symptoms.
